Other Expertise

One candid woman who is prepared to share her story is Jane Cornes. Before reeling off a long list of achievements and accolades, it is worth mentioning that Jane understands too well the feelings of guilt faced by women. Experiencing her own personal hardships along the way to her success is what makes Jane’s story a true inspiration. Yes, Jane is highly successful. Yes, Jane’s entrepreneurial flair has put her in a fortunate position. And finally yes, she can emphatically state she loves her lifestyle. However, Jane is the first to admit that the journey has not always been smooth. There have been challenges, setbacks and obstacles to overcome. Needles to say, there are still hurdles from time to time as life evolves with seemingly an ever-increasing spiral of commitments. It is about having a positive attitude, healthy mind and body that allows Jane to strike the right balance.

Jane hopes to shed some ‘genuine light’ on what real women face and to dispel the myth that the perfect woman is out there. Most importantly, Jane wants women to realise that taking care of oneself is first and foremost in leading a happier and healthier life – now that is how true success should be measured.

Jane Cornes is 30. She is self-employed and the founding director of a number of companies including PMA Models and most recently Lady Jane Healthy Living. All business ventures stem from a passion and interest in fitness training, wellbeing and nutrition.

Like all good success stories, there is a beginning. But Jane’s beginning started with a devastating setback. Early on, Jane’s sporting and athletic ability granted her the opportunity to partake in a wide variety of sports ranging from triathlons to snow skiing. The chance to compete at an elite level took Jane to America, where her skiing career was set to soar. After a number of months ski training at high altitude, Jane suffered a major health scare, quashing her dreams of ever becoming a professional ski athlete. Suddenly, Jane was faced with the certainty that her ambitions would never be realised.

Jane returned to Australia devastated but not deterred. Conceding that her life was to take a new direction, she focused her efforts elsewhere and built up a highly successful personal training business targeted to women. Jane was passionate about her job and enjoyed working closely with clients on a personal level, helping them to achieve their fitness goals. Having an opportunity to work closely with women and to understand their lifestyle obstacles got Jane thinking. Firstly, she realised that women were all facing a similar dilemma, ‘time’. But the fundamental of the problem ran a lot deeper. Finding justification to spend that little time they could afford on themselves was the real hurdle to overcome. Jane established Lady Jane Healthy Living providing women with nutritional and training advice. The purpose of Lady Jane Healthy Living is to inspire women to take care of themselves, helping them to look and feel good.

Jane’s motivation behind Lady Jane Healthy Living is modelled on her own experiences. In her early 20s, Jane left the comfort of her Melbourne lifestyle and relocated to the Gold Coast alone. With no friends or family accompanying her, she took a risk. Determined to build her own business, she worked as a personal trainer during the day and concentrated on her business ventures in the evening. Her courage paid off.

Jane is now married and has a two year old son. The transition from businesswoman to mother was Jane’s greatest challenge. The issues faced by many of her previous clients suddenly came hurtling home – the reality had sunk in. This was hard. It was really hard.

Like many new mothers, Jane was confronted with exhaustion beyond belief, a crying baby and no immediate family close by while also recovering from surgery. As the months passed, sleep deprivation worsened. Jane hit rock bottom and it was then she decided to get back into shape for her own wellbeing and most importantly, sanity. There was nothing easy about it. Finding the strength and motivation to get out and get moving was not easy on a few hours sleep. Deep down, Jane knew that getting fit would help her cope with the anxiety of motherhood. And it did. Jane eased her body back into exercise slowly. After a number of months, Jane was far exceeding her fitness goals and decided to train for a full marathon. Numerous physicians previously advised Jane that she should not entertain the thought of any endurance event given her medial history. Jane took this as a challenge.

As testament to the fact that finding a balance is possible, Jane recently completed her first 42km full marathon. This comes after months of training while still balancing her role as mother, wife and businesswoman. Jane stresses the point that her achievements must also be credited to her support network - her family. Her husband provides endless support and encouragement. Likewise, her parents provide guidance having instilled in her a zest for life, business and the key attributes to pursue ambitions with passion and determination.

Women need to conquer these feelings of guilt for taking time to live a healthier lifestyle. It is not just about feeling better, being healthy and happy. It is about investing in the most important asset for the future – you.

Jane’s message is clear and simple. “Live life to the fullest. Follow your dreams, let your heart guide you and surround yourself with people who love and inspire you.”
